If your ceiling fan or the light on the fan doesn t work when the chain is pulled then the problem is most likely a broken fan pull chain switch.

Took the switch apart and now don t know how to put it back together correctly or should i just get a new switch.

A broken pull chain on a ceiling fan almost always requires replacement of the on off switch as a repair.
Unscrew the screws where the light fixture attaches to the fan assembly.

A few models do allow you to reattach the chain but you must access the switch before.
The switch will also need to be replaced if the chain will not pull down or if it broke off inside the fan housing.
Unscrew the metal collar through which the pull chain should extend.

When no pull chain is visible this likely means that the pull within the ceiling fan has broken near or inside the ceiling fan pull switch.
Remove the light fixture housing from the fan.
If your switch is completely broken purchase a replacement at a local hardware store before removing the old one and installing the new switch.
