See below to help calculate the ideal downrod length. This is a fan without a downrod. However for extra tall ceilings you may need a longer downrod than provided. Many ceiling fans include a downrod.

9 ft ceiling 6 in downrod. Hunter fans are compatible with single threaded downrods while hunter original fans require a double threaded downrod. Ceiling height in feet minus 9 includes the fan height downrod length for example if your ceiling is 12 high you will need a 3 downrod to ensure the fan is positioned at the proper height. For a ceiling below 8 feet we recommend a flushmount or hugger fan.

This downrod chart helps us to determine which downrod size you need for your fan based on the height of the ceiling. For taller ceilings many fan manufacturers suggest dropping a ceiling fan all the way down to 8 to 9 feet from floor level. Check the packaging to see if the downrod is included and note the size. If your ceiling is at least 8 high you may want to consider a fan with a short downrod rather than a flush mounted fan.

For example if your ceiling is 12 feet high and your ceiling fan is 12 inches in height you will need a 24 inch downrod to mount the ceiling fan between eight and nine feet above the floor. Made for rooms with high ceilings typically 8 feet or higher. This insures the fan passes building code when installed from a standard 8 foot ceiling.
